ELI5: Topographical Model of The Mind

[May 27, 25]

The Topographical Model of the Mind is a way to picture how our thoughts and feelings are stored and how we experience them. It’s like the mind has three parts: the conscious, the preconscious, and the unconscious.

The conscious mind is what you’re aware of right now—like reading this or thinking about your favorite game. The preconscious holds things you’re not thinking about at the moment but can remember if you try, like what you had for dinner last night.

The unconscious is the deepest part; it hides thoughts, memories, and feelings that you don’t even know are there—especially ones that might be uncomfortable or confusing. Even though you don’t notice them, those unconscious things can still affect how you feel or act.

Sometimes, the mind even blocks certain thoughts from coming up on purpose—that’s called repression. This model helps explain why people sometimes feel upset or behave in strange ways without knowing why.

Therapists use it to help people explore what’s hidden in their minds, so they can understand themselves better and feel more in control. So, think of your mind like an iceberg: what you see above the water is small, but there’s a lot more going on underneath!
